RUSSIAN AS A FOREIGN
LANGUAGE

General Information

The study and improvement of the Russian language by foreigners in Russia has several advantages, since teachers are native Russian speakers. In addition, while living and studying in Russia, students have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the language, which greatly facilitates the learning process.
This program includes work on the textbook by M. Aksenova The Russian language in new ways (Forum, Moscow, 2010). The first edition of this textbook (Zlatoust, St. Petersburg, 1999) became a bestseller because of its exceptional utility and value for both teachers and students. 25 years of experience of teaching Russian to foreigners at Moscow State University has been embodied by the author of the textbook The Russian language in new ways, M. Aksenova in the textbooks since 1984. Compared to the previous edition of the last textbook in 1999-2000 in this edition there is a unified system of tasks and new names replacing some outdated realia.
Using the textbook students can get an idea of the language as a system, be provided with a strong lexical and grammatical basis for communication, and (which is very important) form the skills that by the completion of the course allow to improve their knowledge on their own - mostly through reading and communicating in Russian. Activities based on the textbook give students an idea of the interconnection of phonetics, intonation and grammar.
The Russian language in new ways by M. Aksenova is a course of Russian as a foreign language "from scratch". Therefore, the amount of lexical and grammatical material, methodology and the way of its implementation, the number and variety of texts can make the textbook useful for various categories of students, depending on their goals.
The textbook can be used as an elementary course in groups where students want to get basic communication skills within a short term. In these groups, the material used is units 1-12, except for Optional.
If the purpose of education is to acquire knowledge within the volume of the first level of certification, grammar units 1-22 are used.
The full tutorial is recommended for those students who want to master deeply enough the Russian language.
Doing the course in full provides students with sufficient lexical and grammatical knowledge and forms the skills to further develop their knowledge (supervised by a teacher or through self-studies).
Classes in this textbook make it possible to read books on their chosen specialty, newspapers and magazines, to communicate with colleagues, and read fiction.
The textbook can be used:
  • As a corrective course, for example, to adjust the knowledge of the case system: see the table of case-based application (units 6-15);
  • To work on specific grammatical topics, such as material for the study of the verb given in all units, from unit 12 to the study of verbs of motion
  • from unit 13, etc.
  • To work on particular lexical topics (see Word-formation and vocabulary, starting from unit 6).
  • For the development of speech (pre-text work, text, post-text work).
Textbook can be used by those students for whom the Russian language is a hobby. The detailed design of each topic, the material easy to perceive, texts having pre-text and post-text tasks, Revision tasks - all this makes the tasks easy to fulfil.
The textbook can also be used as a guide for novice teachers of Russian as a foreign language. As shown, the textbook can be used as a self-study book.
The textbook is called The Russian language in new ways because for the first time in the practice of teaching Russian as a foreign language the task is set to make the process of learning controlled both by the teacher and by the students.
Experience has shown that this problem is successfully solved (according to both teachers using the book since 1999, and students).
The task of learning to make the process meaningful, manageable and controllable by the students determined the principle and method of presentation (and understanding) of the grammatical material.

Principle:
Paradigmatic approach is phased (step-based) representation (and interpretation) of the grammatical material.

Methodology:
- The basic unit of representation (and interpretation) of the grammatical material is the original (initial) form.
- A table-algorithm is a means of grammatical presentation of the material.
The table contains the original algorithm and the mechanism of modification of the original form. See Tables that represent the meanings of case (units 6-15), and other. Grammatical material is presented in stages (steps). Each step is another modification of the original form. The result of the work is reflected in Table-paradigm (see Tables in the textbook, as well as tables in the annex to the textbook).
Language is a system in which all parts are interrelated. Therefore, phonetics, intonation, grammar are presented in the textbook in their relationship. This representation has practical value. One example is Tables of hardness / softness of consonants. Enough to remember the hard version of the endings and to know that it corresponds to a soft option (which in the textbook is given in brackets).
